šŸ‘ØšŸæā€šŸŽ¤ My obsession with Kendrick Lamar is finally paying off!

If you haven’t already seen, my posts analyzing Kendrick Lamar’s Super Bowl Halftime Show are currently going viral on IG & TikTok—1.3M+ views and counting. I dropped a couple of videos breaking down the symbolism in his performance, which sparked some deep community discourse about the power of his genius, the importance of critical thinking, and the role of artists in reflecting the times. You’ll have to check out the posts to see what I said.

If you know me, you know I’m a Kendrick stan—like, I’ve literally written papers on the dude. Back in 2015, Colin Tilley, the director of Kendrick’s Alright music video, even showed love for my analysis breaking down its visual symbolism. So when the Halftime Show hit, I was locked in.

It also brought back one of my favorite life memories. A few years ago, I was working a youth camp when I mentioned how hyped I was that Kendrick was in town (Oakland). Next thing I know, the legendary Nedra Ginwright—being the incredible woman that she is—straight up gifted our whole facilitator crew tickets to see him that night. We rolled up in our Camp Akili dashikis and had the whole venue LIT! Still one of the best surprises of my life. Gratefully, I got to see him a few more times after that, thanks to an ex who shared my love for music and always came through with concert tickets—no complaints there, haha.

Then, during the Halftime Show, I had another full-circle moment seeing my homies from Turf Feinz up there with Kendrick. My guys really went from dancing on BART to the Super Bowl! All things are possible. Ase. The Turf Feinz mean the world to me—not just because they embody Oakland culture, but because I had the honor of working with them on a project. We featured the same crew that performed at the Super Bowl in a video I shot honoring Harry Belafonte for an awards ceremony. The remix and their performance represented the next generation showing love to an icon.

Here’s some BTS footage of me directing that shoot with the Turf Feinz for the Harry Belafonte tribute.

So in honor of a couple of things that all happened to sync up perfectly timing wise, the inspiration from Kendrick’s Super Bowl performance, the virality of HillmanTok (the movement on TikTok where Black creators have taken on the role of instructor are sharing their expertise and created our own digital university), and our plans already in motion to launch something special for our online community…. I’d like to announce…
