🙏 A Moment for Los Angeles

I want to take a moment to acknowledge the devastating fires that have forever changed the lives and landscape of Los Angeles. For those who may not know, I am a descendant of civil rights icon Jackie Robinson, the first African American in Major League Baseball, and along with his brother, Mack Robinson, the Olympian who won silver in the 200-meter race at the 1936 Berlin Olympics, just 0.4 seconds behind Jesse Owens. Their olympic victory was a powerful defiance of racist ideology as Hitler watched from the stands. These two incomperable athletes, my uncles, are the brothers of my great-grandmother. My family’s legacy lives on in monuments, homes, and folklore across Pasadena & Altadena, the historically Black communities impacted by the fires. These areas were among the first in America to resist redlining, allowing Black families to build generational wealth through property ownership. I also completed my student teaching at John Muir High School in Pasadena, where the legacy of my family is written on the walls there, where they attended.

Malibu and the Palisades hold a special place in so many of our hearts, with their breathtaking sunsets, scenic hikes, and iconic architecture. It’s hard to fathom that these cherished towns, as we’ve known them, are forever changed. I have sweet memories from working and celebrating with loved ones in these communities. My father was a firefighter, my ex is a firefighter, and some of my friends served as incarcerated firefighters. I extend my deepest gratitude to these honorable heroes for their unmatched bravery and selflessness.

As we all process this tragedy, my heart is with the personal friends I know who have lost their homes. This includes the family of my late friend Michael Latt (who I mentioned previously in recent newsletter), whose legacy has been a major inspiration for developing Infinityland. Michael’s family has now also lost their home in the fires, compounding their grief in unimaginable ways.

Please continue to hold Los Angeles in your thoughts, hearts, and actions as the community works to heal, rebuild, and respond.
